I've recently changed the temperature gauge sender and coolant temperature sensor on my series 3 16V and I thought I'd post the intermotor numbers here for future reference:

Gauge sender 5242 (also know as 52420)
CTS 55450

I struggled to get a 5242, all of the local factors were saying they couldn't get one and in the end I got a older unused one from ebay (hence the 4 digit intermotor number) so if you see one then buy it.
