Hi chaps...

Pretty sure I have a problem with one of the CV joints on the nearside of the car.

I want to remove the driveshaft that side and then have a good look at it all on the bench. Any hints?

According to the manual all that's required is to remove the bolt on the hub and the 6 Allen bolts on the CV joint (gearbox end). Is this correct?

Also the hub bolt is done up to around 350ftlb... any ideas for achieving this? I plan to put a bar across two wheel bolts to keep it still... good idea?

Hints to buy a 1" drive torque wrench not acceptable Laughing they're about £350.

Bob

Hang a 1lb weight from a 350 foot long extension bar?

Undoing things like this in the past has been possible with someone standing hard on the brakes.

All the best

Impact driver? Blimey... you don't mean an impact wrench do you? I can't imagine smashing 350ftlb across my fingers... perhaps I'll invite you round Iain to do it for me!?! Laughing

Keith... I guess I could hang my 100lb mate from a 3'6" bar Laughing good thinking that man!

Do you really have a friend who weights 7st 2lb?

In my experience numbers like that just mean "as tight as you can"!

Yeah, Using a long bar with a bit of scoffolding or similar to get leverage and as jeremy said, Chuffing tight.

Probably easiest to undo with wheel on ground and working through wheel centre. Not sure our brakes are up to stopping more than 20lbft pressure Rolling Eyes

Socket should go through. If not wheel off, fit socket, wheel back on then use short extension and fit wrench. Bit of a faf but easiest way on your own Very Happy

Marvellous!

Going to see if I can get complete shaft for replacement rather than faffing about with UV joints and stuff.

Keep ya posted ...

Hi all,

Let me throw in some info regarding the driveshaft removal.

First of all you need a 6mm Hex nut to undo the nuts from the gearbox side CV joint; the hex nuts usually accumulate dirt so you have to either clean the inside of the hex nut using a slim screwdriver or make sure you gently press in the hex nut in order to expel dirt.

Regarding the axle nut: It is a 36mm nut that can be removed only if you have in hand a machined socket like the photo shows. Since the hub is conical a non machined socket will not fully grab the axle nut and it wont be long till you round the axle nut.

A good piece of advise to prevent the axle from turning is either applying the brakes or a better way is to wedge a screwdriver on the gap of the vented brake disk against the fixed caliper bracket.

I had used a regular lever to undo the axle nut which is used to remove the wheel bolts; it is around 70cm long and the axle nut was easily removed without any major difficulty. However on installation I used the torque wrench to fully tighten the axle nut to the specific setting; be sure to punch the axle nut on both sides in order to prevent it from unlocking.

As far as the CV joint is concerned then this is a hell of a dirt job. If I am not mistaken there are a couple of variations of the CV joint so in order to get a new one you need to have the old one as a sample.

Hope this helps.

Regards

EDIT: Here are the dimensions for the machined socket.

Hi,

Than is spot on about that 36mm socket needing machining.

I recently tightened up my hub with a new nut.

It was fackin tight, but i managed with a jack handle on the end of a 'strongarm' 1/2 inch dive. As i was on my own I wedged my stoplock between the brake pedal and seat front, which worked.

Interesting.

So the smallest outside diameter needs to be 48mm?

36mm nut (A/F), I make that 18mm radius.

Therefore, external radius (A/C) = 18/cos30 = 20.8mm.

Therefore, external diameter (A/C) is 41.6mm.

That doesn't seem particularly thin? 48 - 41.6 = 6.4mm, which is 3.2mm socket wall each side of the points.

Perhaps that is thin on such a large socket! Laughing

Hi,

I started with a laser(i think) socket and ground back just a little around the top quarter or so. It wasn't a beautiful fit but did the job.

Probably not viable Bob, but i'd be happy to send it to you if you wanna pay postage, for you to give it me back at Auto Italia stanford hall in June if you're going.

That's what I do if the wheel's already off, but it's certainly less hassle to unblock it with the car on four wheels with the handbrake on. A good quality 1/2 inch socket, bar and about four feet of pipe usually does it.
