In the last 200 miles or so my gearlever has started making a buzzy humming in top gear. If I apply gently pressure to the left it stops.

Please tell me this is a linkage problem not a 'box problem.

I would say that when you apply pressure and it stops it would be a linkage thing - (mine rattles at high revs and just putting my hand on it stops it) But to be sure I would get someone else to drive whilst you have a good listen. I'd probably remove the gear stick surround and pull off the rubber jobby so any linkage vibrations/noise will be more apparent.

Mine rattles like that at about 7,500 rpm! Laughing

Probably linkage. Probably fall off soon leaving you stranded.

No my knob is firm, if I grip the shaft that stops the buzzing too.

Hi,

known problem ; it's the iron bushing on the lever/linkage articulation. You need to renew it and both o-rings that go in its grooves.
i modded mine with a custom turned delrin insert to avoid changing these parts every 200 000 kms. So far so good.

regards,
zp

Just my two bits, but renewing the cylindrical rubber bush in the gear linkage cured that problem for me.
