Hi there,
Does the oil pump differ from engine to engine ie, would one from a 1.5 boxer fit in the 1.7 16v? I only ask as I've seen one (albeit from a picture)from a 1.5 and it looks exactly the same.
Also, is there supposed to be a gasket on the oil pump or is it a direct fit between the machined planes.
Thanks, Lee. |

I think that they are all the same?
I havent been able to spot a difference anyway.
No gasket. Just machined surfaces bolted together.

Hey Lee,
if you look at the oil pick up where it joins onto the bottom of the pump, you will notice a difference in height.
when my 16v oil pick-up was broken, i went to pick up a replacement, they couldn't find one the same, mine was deeper and they were just about to give me the complete oil pump for an 8v to replace mine, but then they found an oil pick up for my 16v and saved me the hassle. So there are differences, the 16v has to pump oil around more places than the 8v
Are you about to change yours? I can offer you some advice if you are, as i remember doing my oil pick up quite vividly, i wont pester you if you know what to expect. ![Laughing](images/smiles/icon_lol.gif) _________________ x2 33 16v

Thanks for the replies guys.
Al, thanks for the offer of advise but sadly I've done this before I replaced one before because I had low pressure at idle and now the same thing has returned (possibly a bit of big end got in there and buggered it up) so now I'm after another one. On the other hand I was thinking of getting my "spare" one reconditioned but not sure if this is possible or if anyone does it. Any ideas anyone? |

Hi Lee,
I *have* heard of reconditioned oil pumps. There are lots of listings on Google for them, but they tend to be off-the-shelf recon units I think (i.e. reconditioned as a batch of 2,000 in India and then sent back to the UK).
One idea, http://www.partsgateway.co.uk/ or http://www.247Spares.co.uk
Now I know they never have dealers with the parts you want, BUT, a few times I've asked for parts on there and got a text from a company who says "we don't have one, but can recondition your old one".
Just a thought for something you might try...

RE: the water pump
When i did my head i noticed there is a small hole in the waterpump casting that shows the pump shaft. Does anyone know if this can be greased, like a grease nipple? _________________ x2 33 16v

nope it is drilled to provide a path for the leaking fluid in case the inner seal gets damaged. Otherwise the cooling fluid would be expelled around the shaft and drip straight on the belt, causing slippage and droplets would be flying all around under the hood, soaking everything.
