hey all, well ive finally got my bonnet open with a bit of skilfull yanking lol but now I have another problem, ever since cleaning the engine bay up, cleaning the throttle body out etc and changing the cap and arm, my idle when hot has gone from a fairly shaky 850 ish to around 1500 when warming up and around 1150 when hot, where can I can turn the wick down a little bit?
Also, the engine is now performing excellently but can the pipe that goes from the oil cap to the TB be replaced with a breather, I dont like the thought of all that oil vapour etc being burned in the engine? _________________ 1993 1.5 IE 63k Miles, Renovation Project

Hi,
I will answer to the second question regarding the oil breather tube. Do not install a filter to the tube. The engine needs the oil vapors in order to run properly...in addition antipollution regulations require oil vapors to be burned during combustion.
Hope this helps.

The crankcase is designed to run at negitive pressure (i.e. some degree of vacuum) - so that pipe SHOULD stay on there.
The idle control is on the front of the intake manifold. There are two pipes going in the front.... a thin one (which does the AAV, for extra air when cold) and the fat one which is the idle bypass pipe.
Where this (the fat one) pipe goes into the manifold, there is a double nut configuration.... undo one (can't remember which), alter the other, and tighten the first one down to lock the new idle setting.
In the manifold, there is a rubber washer... screwing the pipe down on this changes it's shape, thereby changing the appature. Should you find you can't turn the idle down enough, you probably need to replace the washer as it's perished. It's actually more like a little black doughnut. Alot of people don't even realise it's in there!
Hope that helps!

Good to see ya too Paul - 1 hour 35 minutes - to Derbyshire. Was going some though.
I'm surprised I managed to put together a reasonable explanation of how idle adjustment works after... but it looks ok today!

I got the idle sorted thanks bobbber! and I guess I will leave everything else alone, next thing to do is sort my 1 knackered engine mount and change the gearbox oil and PAS fluid.....
on another note, what temperatures does everyones cars run at? mine sits between 60 and 80 in normal driving but when stuck in traffic will get upto 100 fairly quick, fans cuts in and it wont go any higher? is that a normal sort of thing, the coolant is a nice colour and doesnt go anywhere so im thinking it may be worth changing the thermostat? or not if this is how its supposed to be! _________________ 1993 1.5 IE 63k Miles, Renovation Project

Yes - typical signs of a broken thermostat.
They "fail open"... meaning when they break they open up - meaning the engine runs cold.
That's a thermostat change on your list too then!

It was 1 in million, well maybe 1 in 10
Usual way is that they don't fail instantly, they start to partialy leak whole time which with time opens more and more (thermostat closes less and less), or in your case they stop opening at all. _________________ Tino Vatavuk
