PostPosted: Wed May 24, 2006 11:06 pm    Post subject: New gearbox clutch won't fit! Reply with quote

I've just got a new "racing" gearbox with an LSD for my fwd 1.7ie 1994. Today I removed the old box to find that although the boxes are practically identical, the spline that locates in the clutch is diferent (looks bigger and less teeth?) than my original box.
Any idea how to overcome this. I will obviously have to replace the clutch. But what clutch do I need?
Any advice would be gratefully recieved.
Thanks
TomB

First, laboriously count the teeth on both to make sure.

I've counted the teeth and find I have 20 on the new box and 24 on the old one. The spline on the new box has an outside diameter of 22mm, whereas the OD on the old one has 20mm dia.
Suggestions please?

I've also noticed that the protrusion of the shaft is different on them too.
New box =63mm
old box= 55mm

So far I've managed to find out that the box must have a ford escort input shaft. Adrian at AH Motorsports has been very helpful. This is a racing mod, done because the alfa shafts tend to shear!
But here's the problem:-
I don't want a solid racing clutch. I need to use this car on the road not just on the track. Easy! Fit a Ford escort clutch...erm....NO they are too small! AAArgh.
I'll keep you posted.

According to Luk I need two clutches to make one good one. I need the pressure plate from a normal Alfa 33 and the friction plate from a Mitsubishi Galant. If this works I'll be happy as it should cost less than a race clutch or a custom special. Its taken most of the day on the phone and computer to work all this out. I'm glad I'm not charging myself labour!

Phew,

Was that the gearbox that was on ebay - with the LSD - I did almost start bidding on it - but instead bought most of the rest of the parts - but not engine or gearbox.

For my track day car I have a 1.2 sud box onto my engine - with a vauxhall astra deisel clutch. This all works very well - with 170 hp.

Interesting to know how you get on.

Keep the posts going.

Apologies to tom for the post hijack but this one is addressed to mr guest who bought most of the remains of the 33 race car from Ipswich. I was DESPERATE to buy the rear axle but they wouldn't sell it to me because they had already agreed to sell everything to you. If for any reason you decide that you don't want to use it could you please let me know and i'll buy it from you.

does the astra diesel clutch fit on the 20 tooth spline then? Or is your box unmodified?

I forgot to say....Yes it was the one on ebay.
So I got hold of two clutches (one Mitsubishi and the other standard Alfa 33).
They fit nicely! Unfortunately my car won't start so i can't test it out. Everything feels just as it should though. If it is a big success I'll let you know. If it isn't I've just blown £235 for no good reason. I fitted the box all on my own ,outside and in the pouring rain. Quite proud of that acheivement. Not so proud about damaging ecu forgetting to disconect battery before starting the job!
DOH!!!!

Hugh,

sorry forgot to log in last time - so came up as guest.

I do have the rear axle - and it should be going into a project car before long. When I bought the axle I fortunately took the rest of the car and got all of the mounting points and front suspension to go with it. I know that doesn't help you much.

If for any reason I did sell it on then I would endeavour to make contact with yourself first.

Tom,

It needs to be an early astra diesel van clutch - but yes it almost fitted straight on. I had to do a bit of grinding of the centre boss to reduce the hight slightly - but otherwise it went straight onto the normal splines. My gearbox , as yours, is a 1.2 sud box converted I guess to pick up 33 half shafts - but mine has no LSD.

Edward.

Which part is from the astra? Just the friction plate? or the whole kit?
