Happy New year to all,
having problems starting the car.. Unless i press immediately the accelerator and keep it in 2000+ rpm the car "dies"..
If then i wait till the car is warm, then i can leave it in idle with no problems at all.
Any ideas what could be the cause? |

What kind is it?
Does it have a manual choke? |

sorry paddy should have provided the info..
1.7ie, series 3 and (sadly) no manual choke..
Suspecting it must be the the gas filter.
For the moment will try to increase the idle, so i can drive it at least.. |

What is interesting is that it runs OK at idle when warm, but stalls when cold. It is not related to the idle speed being adjusted wrongly, as one wouldn't need to keep it above 2000 rpm if this was the problem.
It sounds to be a problem with the mixture being wrong when cold. I don't know about the fuel filter - would this make a big difference when warm or cold? Also, one would perhaps notice less power at higher rpm when cold?
Could it perhaps be related to the Lamba probe? Any one here had any problems similar to this?
If you run a search for "Lambda" on this site, there a few threads which may contain interesting info for you. |

All our cars being carbed, I have little experience of injection but as I understand it there should be an engine temp. sensor hooked to the ECU and this governs the cold start mixture. If that sensor has failed you will not be getting the enrichment necessary for cold running hence no idle until it warms up.
A restrictive fuel filter I would expect to show up in any power stages of running.

fixed now..
garage replaced something called "cold start" which is under the exhaust manifold. starts ok now , even though somehow the idle rpm is around 750 so probably will bring it up to 850-900... |
