Help Please.

Right this is non-33 related. I'm thinking of buying a Citroen Xantia 1.9TD for my good lady. S reg for £335 with minor work needed on the rear suspension. The only thing stopping me is that there is a bearing scream/whine from the bottom crank pulley end of the engine. I can't pinpoint exactly where the noise is coming from its either the crank bearings the water pump or maybe the turbo. The noise varies with engine speed but doesn't get worse. Load on the engine doesn't effect it either. My question is can you get a whine/scream from the crank bearings or do they just knock?

crank main bearings don't make any squealing noises, they will just make a thumping sound - you probably either have a pully rubbing, a buggered water pump or maybe a knackered clutch release bearing.

A long screwdriver, blade on the block or wherever and plastic end against the ear can help pinpoint the location. Mains rumble rather than knock. They certainly don't scream or whine. Changing the alternator belt can for some reason make a difference.

Cheers for the replies, bought a 1998 one(1.9td xantia, working aircon) from the auctions for £300 spot on condition. I fell on my feet as you are really buying blind.

Amazing prices, 2002 cars going for 2K.

A mint 8 month old kia went for 2.5K

WOW

Why is it that second hand cars are worth so little in England? Is it because the climate means all cars rust quite quickly, or is it something to do with tax or what? Shocked

1) The manufacturers make so many surplus new cars they can't give them away

2) Hardly anyone knows how to fix their car themselves any more; cars don't get maintained properly, as garages are so expensive. Modern cars seem to go forever without maintenance; when the poor thing shuts down, a new one on credit seems a better deal than a huge garage bill

3) House prices have increased so much in UK that everyone with a house thinks they are rich, with equity they never dreamed of to borrow against. They treat the notional increase in value as income, and need a new set of wheels to reflect their status as successful property developers.
