I need to remove the cylinder head on my Alfa 33 16v.

Does anyone know if I can remove the R/H head (Cylinders 1 & 3) without removing the engine from the car? How can it be done?

If not, could I lower the engine and twist it far enough to lower the cylinder head and remove it off the bolts? Will it touch the front fixed crossmember?

Can anyone (who's done this delicate trick) please let me know in the next couple of days?

Hi Adam,

I read your last post about the cambelt coming off. Was this caused by the crankpully nut not being tightened up enough? Same thing happened to me a few weeks ago. Needed 2 exhaust valves and 8 valve stems as the old ones were knackered. As well as all the gaskets and fluids and stuff.

Anyway, nearly back together again now. Going to do the crankshaft nut up even more FT this time, with a bit of locktite.

Unless someone knows of a cunning trick, I'm afraid it's engine out time again for you. Even if you could get the head off without dropping the motor, it would be a hell of a fiddly job. It's hard enough getting the sparkplugs in and out!

Sorry to hear about your alfa,as you know,thats what happend to mine ,but the good news is when mine was fixed(brunswick motorsports)they didn't drop the engine,or have to.i'll find out exactly how they did it on friday,as i'm over there on sat'day.
P.S. Yes the back springs are availa ble

P4 pauls right it can be do in car,as the same thing happened to me with the crank nut coming off.killed 8 valves on one side and bent one on the other. i did all this work out side my house in the road as i dont have the luxury of a garage. i will send you a pm with my mobile number. if you give me a call i will talk you through it. its not hard to do just takes time. p.s. do you still want the seat?

Hi John,

Can you give brief explanation of how to get the head off without dropping the motor. It just seems so tight, I'm intrigued.

On a series 2, can you get the crank pulley nut off without dropping the motor?

I wish I hadn't jumped to the conclusion that the motor had to come out.

Right! let me begin,
lets say you where going to take the drivers side head off. get a jack under the engine so it takes the weight of it. then undo the crossmember on that side all the way.then undo the other side abit so to alou it to pivit.undo the main mount in the middle of the engine bay that bolts to the gearbox and take it right out.youve got the jack under the engine so your ok. then undo the mount that is in the middle of the crossmember.you how can drop the engine just enuff to clear the gearbox mount in the middle.now if you walk round it the passanger side you can pull the engine over with a good tug.this should give you the space you need to get to the head bolts.for some reason this side was easier to do than the other.as when i did that side i had to get the alfa jack and jack the engine over a bit more.strange but true.
hope this helps and makes some sence p.s. the head bolts need a T55 socket!!
good luck chaps its not that hard to do just takes time.if i can do it in the road you can do it any where and ive got the photo's to prove it
