Between these and the heads are some really thick, profiled gaskets/seals.
Can I get away with taking the covers off and putting the old seals back?

Hi,
I'd say if they are perfect put them back, perhaps with a bit of hylomar too.
You've just gotta think that if they leek the covers will be an absolute mofo to get off with the engine in.
Do AR still do them. They were about £16 each six years ago.
Cheers,

I replaced mine as they were a bit split in places and they were about £30 from Mango's.
Really go over them with a fine toothed comb to check them if your going to re-use. As John said, It's a bit of a bitch getting them off in situ. |

Gave it a good check over.... damn it was split in several places! Time to replace with new!
gtvnut : People argue about this one often, but the answer is actually yes... IF you don't mind a nasty, tight job. I'd prefer not to do it this way... you can (apparently) move the engine on its mounts to gain extra clearance. JT?
Hylomar??? John??? This is universal 'blue'? Non-setting? Or there is Red Haematite... Semi-setting... or the "original" setting gasket compound. Holy moly(bdendium)... Which one is the right one?

Erm I dunno. Play it safe and go for new gaskets with no extra toppings!
When i worked in a garage (over 20 years ago now) we sometimes used blue hylomar on low pressure flat gaskets as belt 'n' braces, and sometimes to stick gaskets in place. We also used a pro equivalent of instant gasket now and again that was grey- think it had a German name.
